KINGSTON — Abdallah Bassuny, 37, an inmate from Bath Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre, died while in Correctional Service Canada custody on Thursday.
At the time of his death, Bassuny was serving a sentence of six years and six months for possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition and other offences. The sentence commenced on Jan. 20, 2022.
Bassuny and three others were arrested by the Ottawa Police Service guns and gangs unit in February 2021 after officers seized a loaded 9-mm Glock 26, a loaded .38-calibre Smith and Wesson, purple fentanyl, cocaine, more than 1,100 hydromophone pills, more than 100 pills of oxycocet, as well as cash, a BMW and drug paraphernalia.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will review the circumstances. Its policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified, a news release stated.
