Kingston police arrest relative of 88-year-old homicide victim

KINGSTON — Kingston Police have arrested the son of a man found dead in his Glenburnie home on Monday.

Jahzerah Berndt, 88, was found dead at 2165 McKendry Rd., after Kingston Police responded to the small bungalow for a “check welfare” call for service.

Daniel Berndt, 55, was arrested in Belleville on Thursday. He has been charged with second-degree murder, carrying a weapon during the commission of an offence and breaching his probation. He was taken into custody during a search warrant executed by Kingston Police at a residence in the 300 block of Front Street.

Police have not released what they found when officers arrived at the home, but they identified Jahzerah as the victim of a homicide and contacted his next of kin.

Police are also asking to speak to anyone who may have seen a black, two-door GMC Jimmy being driven between Belleville and Glenburnie on Nov. 12 and 13.

“Furthermore, police are asking anyone who may have a dash camera or security camera to please review their footage from Nov. 12, 2022, and Nov. 13, 2022, in the event the vehicle was captured on camera,” police said.
