OMAHA, Nebraska – No. 23 Arkansas pulled past Ole Miss, 3-2, as Chris Lanzilli and Brady Slavens powered solo homers and starter Hagan Smith delivered eight of the Rebels’ 13 strikeouts on Wednesday night at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The Razorbacks set the tone in the second inning with a lead-off homer by Chris Lanzilli to supply an early lead, 1-0.
However, the Rebels’ Kemp Alderman led off the second with a solo shot of his own to even the score, 1-1.
The bats went quiet until Arkansas’ Brady Slavens joined the bomb squad in the fifth inning, sending one yard to pull ahead, 2-1. Slavens also recorded the longest tracked home run in the Men’s College World Series at 436 feet.
In the eighth inning, the Hogs continued to push forward as Cayden Wallace led off with a double, forcing a pitching change. Jack Dougherty relieved Jack Washburn before Arkansas’ Michael Turner dropped a single in left fielding, scoring Wallace, 3-1. Dougherty found his rhythm after loading the bases with only one out, striking out the next two to end the threat.
Ole Miss kept fighting in the bottom of the ninth, putting on the pressure with bases loaded and no outs. Arkansas called in Zach Morris to sit down the next two before the Rebels’ Justin Bench singled, closing the gap, 3-2. The Hogs sealed the deal after a fly out to left field secured the win.
Arkansas will face Ole Miss Thursday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2 for a decisive semifinal game.
